Working Practices and Legislation

4.1     Demonstrate good health and safety practice when working on film      productions

1)Why is health and safety important when working on film productions?

The point of having health & safety measures, is to ensure the safety of all the crew and other members of the film production, to keep everyone away from any possible incidents and to avoid potential law suits.

“No movie is worth dying for”– Steven Spielberg

2)What are some of the key safety issues relating to film production?

One example of this could be, to have a Risk Assessment. This is the identification, evaluation and estimation of the levels of risks involved in a situation. This ensures how to avoid any possible accidents from happening and thus keeping your team safe.

Needs of the crew members, for example dietary needs, in order to avoid allergic reactions, or intolerance’s, hair and make-up, for further allergens. It can even go as far as to their transport.

Weather and location dependant, for example if you are filming where there is snow or colder temperatures, your crew must be equiped correctly to deal with this, for example hats, warm clothing, boots with a good grip ect. As well as if you are filming in hot sunny places, then suncream, hats, sunglasses, plenty of water… are all needed.

3)How did you apply good health and safety practice when making your film?

A great deal of it is just basic common sense, but even this can struggle to prevail on a film set when you under go certain circumstances such as losing light, weather closing in and exhaustion setting in throughout your crew, this si where sticking to the H&S plan is at its most crucial.

In order to follow H&S correctly, you might consider working through your shoot in advance to make sure that you have that very plan in place just in case something goes wrong or doesnt quite work out how you would like.

4)Include your risk assessment and explain why this is important.

This is important because it is a part of an occupational health and safety management plan. They are there to create awareness of hazards and risk as well as identifying who may be at risk.

4.2     Explain why copyright is important in the film industry

What is Copyright?

Copyright, is extremely important because it constitutes the ownership of one’s original work. Having ownership means you can protect your work as intellectual property and control who makes money from it—which is whom you assign rights to. Copyright is the exclusive right given to the creator of a creative work to reproduce the work, usually for a limited time.

Why does copyright law exist?

Copyright law temporarily gives a company the sole right to copy and distribute work, so they later on included an incentive in the Constitution: Bestowing Congress with the power to grant creators the exclusive right to control their creation for a limited period of time.

What kind of work is covered by copyright?

Copyright, a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture.

What might happen if you were to use copyrighted material in your film?

If you used someone else’s copyrighted material and commercially profited from that use, you may have to pay him monetary damages, and court may prohibit you from further using his material without his consent. … You may also have to give the copyright owner your profits as restitution.

How can you make sure not to infringe copyright law in your film?

Acquire absolute permission to copy protected material by purchasing the relevant CLA licence, (this would meet the demands of those that need to use copyright material on a daily basis and for copying extracts). Check and comply with specific terms of use relating to direct subscriptions or purchased documents supplied directly, including online formats.

How has copyright law and other IP regulation affected your film production?

Copyright had affected our film, as we could not use many of the song choices that we had initially liked and thought suited the themes of the film. Instead we had to spend extra time looking fora suitable song that was not copyrighted, which used up time that we did not have spare.

  1. Hi Abbie, at the moment your answer seems a little disjointed. My advice would be to remove the prompt questions so that your answer flows as one coherent paragraph. Check your spelling, for example “Speilburg”, “this si” etc. You start a paragraph with “One example of this could be, to have a risk assessment” however you have not explained what you are giving an example of. Use the language of the questions but remove the questions themselves. Make sure you are fully articulating yourself, using full sentences, and taking the time to explain each point you make. Please could you update these answers, and complete the module on copyright by 12/12. Thank you!
